By June 4th/5th, the small wood to the left was held by the Germans and the one on the right, the Bois Saint Martin, by the Americans. In the nearest part, at Hill 142 (See map), were the 5th USMC, 1st Battalion. Axel and the 3rd battalion were in the distant part of the wood, covering the right side of the 1st Battalion.
A fierce battle was fought here on June 6th in the field in the middle, costing many lives, but the 1st still managed to take the forrest to the left.
